Hi Folks,

The Elliott Smith Hour will be playing at Studio Grand on Sunday October 19th.
In addition to the usual fare of originals and Elliott Smith arrangements, we will be playing music from Brahms’s 3rd Symphony arranged by myself for the improvising chamber group, and played by:
Zak Hazen and Somin Lim: Violins
Daniel Brown: Cello
Steven Lugerner: Alto Flute/Bass Clarinet/#firshir
Roger Kim (myself): Guitar/Banjo

Doors open at 6:30, and the show starts at 7pm with Inner Ear Brigade, and we will be on after. Studio Grand is located at 3234 Grand Ave, Oakland, CA

2) KALW tonight (wednesday the 15th) at 9pm (PST)!

The Elliott Smith Hour will be playing on KALW’s Fog City Blues. Tune in at 91.7 or online at http://kalw.org/listen-live

I’ve updated my website. Go ahead and check it out: rogerkimmusic.com

stay tuned to hear about our upcoming performance at YBCA in February

New Website

Posted on October 4, 2014

I’ve finally revamped the website with really nifty jquery. I still have to figure out a way to deep link to specific pages (like the Elliott Smith Hour part of the page, for booking), but it’s pretty much ready for public consumption.

It’s not really mobile friendly. If I wasn’t so old fashioned and actually used my smartphone I would probably be more saavy about that. I’ll get to it on the next round of updates.

I’ll do a longer update soon, but I think I might start doing shorter posts. Maybe then I won’t have another year+ lapse.

First Day – Cafe Music

Posted on June 13, 2013

I’m pleased to announce that I am releasing a second First Day Album for free, on bandcamp. The album was recorded live at Awaken Cafe (from our performance as part of the Offside Spark Series, recording courtesy of Christopher Nishimoto) and at Actual Cafe. I think these two live dates are a just representation of what Brendan, Jacob, and I have been working on over the last two years, and mark the end of an era for First Day, since Jacob is leaving soon for LA, and then a semester abroad in Budapest!

While I’m deciding what to do with the moniker First Day (which could be anything) I am starting a new project where I will be arranging music written by, for, and about Elliott Smith. The project is tentatively called “Elliott Smith Hour.” If you are excited about it as I am, you can come see some of these arrangements live at Temescal Arts on July 7th. This will be a special show with a completely acousting trio featuring guitar, banjo, cello, and flute, and we will be opening for the superb Karl Evangelista Trio. In the meantime, here are some Elliott Smith Hour videos to enjoy on youtube.

Finally, I am restarting my residency at Toast Oakland, every sunny Sunday this summer from 4-7pm and my residency at the Berkeley Faculty Club every Thursday from 5-7pm. Find me if you are in the mood for fine wine and a fancy meal accompanied by sweet solo guitar whisperings.

February and March 2013

Posted on January 30, 2013

I have a few really cool shows coming up in February and March and it’d be great to see you at some or all of them.

February 4, 8pm
The Makeout Room, San Francisco
I’ll be playing at the Monday Makeout with my trio First Day (Brendan Liu and Jacob Richards). I’m excited to be opening for some of my favorite musicians, so stick around for Michael Coleman’s Enjoyer and Key West.
February 20, 12pm
Hertz Hall, UC Berkeley
Berkeley’s Nu Jazz Collective, led by Myra Melford will be splitting a noon concert with UC Jazz ensembles. Nu Jazz is myself, Nathan Bickart, Jacob Richards, Devin Hollister, Forrest Riege, Brendan Liu, and Liz Duran
March 2, 7.15pm
Hertz Hall, UC Berkeley
Berkeley Nu Jazz will open for Ben Wendel/Dan Tepfer for a special Benefit for the Jazz and Improvised Music Fund at UC Berkeley.
March 13, 8pm
Berkeley Arts
My trio, First Day (Oscar Westesson and Jacob Richards), will be doing a double bill with the Alex Pinto Trio at the Berkeley Arts location at 2133 University Avenue. If I’m not mistaken there will be some double guitar trio (read Pinto/Kim sextet) action happening that night.

Note that I am no longer playing my weekly at Toast Oakland due to weather conditions. Stay tuned to see when I’ll be back there. Also keep an ear out for rumors about more collaborations with Alex Pinto, and for information about a Burlesque show I’m playing in every Sunday beginning in March through May.
